More bentos!

(Rice cakes, Teriyaki chicken, Fish Tofu, Honey Tomatoes/Peas, Star-shaped Spam cutouts, Strawberry/Grapes)

Have been trying my hand at more bento making! It's a nice way to eat healthy and cute. And pretty economical too. Only troublesome bit is having to wake up extra early on a weekday to prepare it. At least its something to look forward to for lunch!

A bento 'picnic' I'd prepared for me and a friend. We found a lovely roof-top garden in the building and had our lunch which was nice for a change. My friend made egg pudding for dessert which was really yums!

Close up of our rice cakes which I made the night before and refrigerated them. I'd packed a set of 3 into individual boxes. If you're wondering what that silver triangular thing is, its cheese. We had cheese and crackers after that.

Unfortunately, the rice cakes were a little too hard as I didn't thaw them enough after taking them out from the fridge. I used seaweed cutouts for the eyes, mouth, and nose. I also inserted spam cut outs inbetween the rice cakes to keep them from sticking together.

My veggie and fruit box. I'd put them into individual cases but I guess they spilled over while carrying them around.

An earlier attempt at bento making. Before finding the punchers for the eyes/nose/mouth, I used raisins instead. I was very pleased to find the puncher at a steal for $5.90 only at an art and craft shop! Those I saw at the Sanrio shop were selling for a lot more. Putting on the face details is actually quite tedious and requires lots of patience! My mum helped me with them. :)

I usually try to vary the main meat dish a little. This one has meatballs and chye sim (preserved vegetables) from dinner the night before. I made extra and kept them separately for use for my bentos.

I had carrot cutouts which were really hard to make! I also strung tomatoes and quail eggs together, kebab style. For dessert, I had blueberries on a stick and konnyaku jelly. The jelly keeps very well and you don't have to worry about it melting. Presentation-wise, very pretty too!

One thing to bear in mind when making bentos is that the food you prepare has to keep well and hygienic. Especially if you're bringing them for work or school. For me, if I know the bentos will be out for a few hours before lunch, I usually pack the food which requires refrigeration in a separate container (e.g. rice cakes + cheese + tofu), and pop it into the fridge once I reach work. The rest like the teriyaki chicken can keep out quite well since the air-con in my office is pretty cold. If you've a microwave near you, its even better cos you can heat up the food and enjoy a warm meal!

Ok till next time!

Bento Love

Hello!

I know, its been super long since my last post! There's so much to update inbetween, I don't know where to begin. Rather than try, I shall just sum up in pictures what I'm up to these days. While jewellery-making will always remain one of my first loves, I'm also trying to expand my creativity into other arenas as well, the latest being - Bento-making!

Before putting them into the box

After my trip to Japan, I've been in-love with all things japanese/kawaii! I went down to Daiso and got my bento-making equipment. Check out the rice moulds in the shape of Hello Kitty, Miffy and ? (I don't know what the bear's name is). I also cut out pieces of spam with cookie cutters (shaped like a rabbit and elephant). My mum added the eyes (raisins) and mouth (carrots) onto them. For colour and to give a more balanced meal, I added cherry tomatoes and blueberries.

These look so cute, it makes me happy just looking at them! :)

I would like to share this quote which I recently chanced upon on someone's blog. This really spoke out to me, and made me see things from quite a different perspective.

"Some people think that it's holding on that makes one strong. In reality, it's letting go."

First post for 2009

It seems like 2008 went by in a blink of an eye, literally. There was a lot to be done, and a lot more on my plate than usual. Somehow, somewhere, i made it. By the grace of my family and kindred spirits alike. No doubt they are only a select few, these precious relationships grew in leaps and bounds, the sort that withstands the test of time or adversity. Gratefulness fills my heart whenever I think of them, and I take heart knowing that angels do exist amongst us. It was also a year I rekindled old friendships which I thought were lost to me for good. I was in the pinkest of health (I never once fell very sick!), must be a real record for me! This was such a contrast to the year before where I was feeling quite poorly. Definitely something I really have to give thanks for.

On these counts, I am thankful for the way 2008 unfolded itself. I knew it was going to a challenging one from the start and it certainly did not disappoint. Unexpected events have found its way in as well and because of them, I learnt a thing or two about growing up.

I think I also became better at juggling my emotions - even with my balls all tossed into the air at once. You realise, in living, there is a time for everything. To love, to win, to share, to lose, to let go. Though to experience all at once is not for the faint-hearted, it is sometimes the best way to really live life to the fullest.

In a strange way, I could not wait for 2009 to begin and here it is.

For me, for everyone, I hope that 2009 will be one we find more rest and peace. May the road ahead lead you to greater dreams of fluffy white clouds and blue skies. I believe our rainbows are waiting for us on the other side. So scurry along now. Hello 2009.

I leave you with one of my favourite songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5RDn5Y0D_0

Look at my xmas tree :)

As part of the office xmas celebrations this year, each department was given a small budget to decorate an area/cubicle/meeting room. This is what we came up with!! We stacked plastic cups to form an xmas tree and filled it with coloured candy, candy canes, and had a santa sitting on the top! What I thought was really cool though was the 'special lighting' effect used. My colleague came up with this ingenious idea to project coloured powerpoint slides onto the cups so it changed colours every 2 seconds. The kaleidoscope of colours was very pretty!

Think word got round about our little display but I'd dismantled our 'tree' by the time people came to look at it. A good thing I snapped some shots! Silly me forgot to take a video of it changing lights though. Anyway, much to our surprise, we won best team for creativity! That really made my day! :)

Merry Xmas and Happy New Year!

My my. Did the past few months just slip by or what! The festive season is just round the corner and there's plenty of merry making all round. Somehow this xmas means more to me coz the past year saw so many highs and lows so I feel the need to treat myself properly before we brave the storms of the new year (again).

Do apologise for this much neglected space. While it seems like not much has been going on, I've actually been back to beading-action for the holidays, which is quite the norm for me, churning out handmade gifts like in santa's little elf workshop. I was too busy packing and gifting them that I forgot to take photos!

The festive eating and gift-exchanging has also started early - which I so absolutely love and look forward to all year. The photo above was stolen from my friend T (thanks!), taken during our annual xmas gathering. Reebs very kindly hosted us at her place and I was totally mesmerized by her fresh xmas tree scent the whole time. Doesn't the tree just look lovely? :) Other random meet-ups/gatherings have also found its way into my calender which are always nice this time of the year.

Anyway, I had some quiet to myself today and thought about all the things that I am, and should be thankful for the past year. In the end, I gave up trying to list the 'big' things and found that the smaller things were really what mattered more...there is happiness in little blessings. I hope everyone takes some time to stock take and appreciate all the blessings - big or small - in your life.

Hope that I'll have more time to doodle here on this website and bring more exciting creations to share with everyone! I guess this space is not only a platform to showcase my creations, but more importantly, a journey that I've embarked on over the years. Witnessing its transformation, seeing how I've evolved, and simply being able to document all of this down means more to me than you'll ever know. :)

Merry xmas and a wonderful new year!
